I’m scared! It appears that Glenn Beck is sometimes an actual reasonable human being, and not a cartoony caricature of a political pundit. He actually makes O’Reilly look wackadoo in this clip (On the Huff Post page linked by the image above). He states that marriage is a Religious Rite and the government doesn’t have anything to do with it.
And as much as I loathe agreeing with Mr. Beck, he’s right. Religious Marriage is about the uniting of two (or more in some religions) people (of the opposite sex currently in most religions) in front of their God/gods/Flying Spaghetti Monster.
The fact that the current government recognized partnership contract shares its name with this religious rite doesn’t change the fact that the partnership contract needs to be available to all regardless of the gender of the person they want to partner with. I personally don’t agree that religions should limit marriage options in their church, but they have a right to control who participates in their Rites and our government can’t tell them otherwise.
It’s one of the wonders of freedom of religion, my church’s (Catholic) dogma/beliefs can’t be the basis of laws for the country (thankfully) and (thankfully) the government can’t require me or my church to violate our beliefs.
